It was one of the top games on the schedule for Week 2 in Texas high school football. On the field, the Chaparrals of Austin Westlake rolled to a 34-14 win over Euless Trinity on Friday night.
The Chaps have not lost a game since October 2019, a winning streak of 26 games and counting.
Westlake QB Cade Klubnik was 22 of 30 passing for 322 yards and a touchdown. He also added two rushing touchdowns. Klubnik is committed to Clemson and is the #26 ranked recruit and #3 quarterback in the country, according to the 247sports Composite Rankings. Klubnik also won the MVP award at the Elite 11 Quarterback Competition.
Running back Hunter Henault rushed for 144 yards and a TD for the Chaps. WR Pierce Turner caught six passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
The Chaparrals defense was equally outstanding. They held Euless Trinity scoreless until the 2:00 minute mark of the 3rd quarter. Will Courtney recorded 13 tackles. C. Barksdale had 10 tackles and two tackles for loss. Will Magids recorded an INT.
QB/RB Ollie Gordon led Euless Trinity with 188 yards and a touchdown.
Westlake is the defending 6A-Div. I state champs and are 42-3 over the last three seasons. In the 2020 title game against Southlake Carroll, Klubnik passed for 220 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns in a 52-34 win over the Dragons.
The Chaps also won the 6A-Div I state title in 2019, with a 24-0 win over Denton Guyer. The Westlake defense recorded two interceptions and three sacks.
Euless Trinity falls to 1-1 and will play Colleyville Heritage next week. Austin Westlake improves to 2-0 and will travel to play Mansfield Summit on September 10.
