MONT BELVIEU, TX- On the first chilly Friday of the football season, the Barbers Hill Eagles blew out the previously undefeated New Caney Eagles with a convincing 49-21 victory for their fifth win in a row.
Backup Dalton Holland filled in perfectly for regular starter Cameron Cauthen, who is out with a collarbone injury. The Barbers Hill defense had New Caney’s number all night, forcing four total turnovers and taking two of those back for touchdowns.
New Caney’s first drive stalled and bad went to worse as their punt was blocked and returned 14 yards by Barbers Hill for a touchdown. Barbers Hill’s defense having their way with New Caney early, forcing three turnovers on three straight drives.
Barbers Hill capitalized off the second forced turnover, an interception, jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead off a 20-yard touchdown throw from backup quarterback Dalton Holland to Christian Rhodes. The third turnover led to an eight-yard touchdown run by Spencer Long and the Barbers Hill Eagles were up 21-0 before the first quarter ended.
After a 50-yard kickoff return by Dwight McGlothern’s, Air Force Quarterback commit Jordan Cooper took a read option play 28 yards for touchdown, putting New Caney on the board. Barbers Hill responded with a 64-yard touchdown pass on the very next play from scrimmage, and just like that the game was out of hand for New Caney.
After an electric first half, it took until more than 8 minutes into the first half until another score, Dalton Holland snuck it up the middle for another Barbers Hill touchdown, increasing their lead to 35-7 at the half.
After stopping Barbers Hill on their first drive of the second half, New Caney attempted to get back into the game, scoring a touchdown on their first drive of the half closing the deficit to 35-14. Barbers Hill responded with their own touchdown drive, highlighted by a 37-yard run by Dalton Holland. If the game wasn’t already sealed, Barbers Hill forced their fourth turnover of the night, this one a pick six, to widen the lead to 49-14. Refusing to stand down, New Caney drove into the closing minutes, scoring in garbage time for the sake of the scoreboard, making the final score 49-21.
This win puts Barbers Hill in second place in the district behind undefeated Crosby. On his thoughts about the win, cold, but excited Coach Westerberg said, “It’s great anytime you get a win in this district towards the end and to be able to get one going into our bye next week. We control our own destiny of getting into the playoffs, so we’ll take a little break and we’ll come back for Porter at the end.”
New Caney dropped their first loss in district play of the season as they now look to bounce back against Porter in the Battle Line on 59 rivalry.
