Best Assistant Football Coach in Texas Named
The Broyles Award, given to the top assistant high school football coach in Texas, was presented this year to Legacy High School’s defensive coordinator, Frank Maldonado. This prestigious accolade was awarded at the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) convention and coaching school.
Named after the legendary University of Arkansas football coach Frank Broyles, the award began by honoring college assistant coaches but expanded to high schools in 2018. Known for his impactful career, Broyles’ legacy continues through this award, celebrating coaches who make significant contributions both on and off the field.
FieldTurf, a Takett Sports Company and a world leader in artificial turf, sponsors the Broyles Award. Brandon Parrott from FieldTurf said, “We’re honored to be associated with the Broyles family, the Broyles Foundation, and the Broyles Award at the college level. The Broyles Award is the pinnacle for assistant coaches.”
Frank Maldonado’s leadership was pivotal in the Rebels’ outstanding season, leading to an outright District 2-6A title and a Class 6A Division I regional semifinal appearance. Texas Tech Head Coach Joey McGuire presented the award and praised Maldonado, saying, “The main reason is because of what he does and what he stands for, and how he pours into kids. He affects so many kids’ lives.”
Coach Maldonado expressed his gratitude, stating, “This is a huge honor… to have your name associated with Frank Broyles is kind of a big deal.” With a humble attitude, Maldonado dedicated the award to his fellow coaches, emphasizing the collective effort required for their success.
The THSCA convention provided a fitting backdrop for celebrating such dedication, showcasing the excellence and impact of assistant coaches in Texas high school football.
