Boerne ISD didn’t have to look far to find its next head football coach. The district has promoted longtime defensive coordinator Brett Sawyer to lead the Boerne Greyhounds, stepping in for Che Hendrix, who recently took a job at the University of Arkansas.
Sawyer has been a key part of Boerne’s success over the past seven years, helping guide the Greyhounds to a 4A Division I state championship appearance in 2022 and a 5A Division II state semifinal run in 2024. With his deep ties to the program and experience leading Boerne’s defense, Sawyer was the natural choice to take over. His promotion ensures continuity, keeping the team on the path it’s been on under Hendrix’s leadership.
This isn’t Sawyer’s first time as a head coach. He previously led Sweeny (2010-2012) and Baytown Sterling (2016-2017), posting a combined 29-26 record. His experience, combined with his familiarity with Boerne’s program, gives him a strong foundation as he takes over a team coming off an 11-4 season. While the Greyhounds will need to replace key seniors, Sawyer is confident that Boerne will remain a force in District 13-5A Division II.
Boerne ISD Athletic Director Stan Leech praised the decision, highlighting Sawyer’s leadership and commitment to the program. The Greyhounds will face a tough district schedule next season, but with Sawyer at the helm, Boerne expects to maintain its winning tradition and build on the momentum of recent years.
