On the heels of a rough 44-0 defeat at the hands of Aubrey in the season opener, the Bowie Jackrabbits returned to their home turf to host the Bulldogs of Howe. Bowie got the upper hand this time around, avenging their 38-13 loss last season with a 37-14 drubbing in the rematch.

The game started out much closer than it ended however. After Bowie fumbled on the opening drive, it was Howe who struck first, as Cirby Coheley connected with Ty Harvey at the 3:50 mark in the first quarter to put the Bulldogs up 7-0.

Bowie answered back on their next drive, with an eight yard dash by quarterback Matthew Wallace. The Jackrabbits opted for the two points, and Wallace connected with Dillon Swaim to take the 8-7 lead. Howe looked ready to respond, but their first of a couple costly turnovers occurred on the following drive. Bowie’s next drive ended with a 3 yard scamper by Wallace, but the failed two point conversion made it a one possession game.

The Jackrabbits however took full control of the game from this point forward, especially behind the stout performance of Wallace, who scored the next four touchdowns on runs of four, 20, three and 16 yards. After two Bowie touchdowns in the third, the scoring summary ended with a touchdown for Howe, as Austin Lee punched it in from six yards out with 27 seconds remaining in the game.

The Bulldogs performed well, regardless of the final score. Despite the stellar performance of Wallace on the ground, it was Howe who recorded the most rushing yards, 208 to Bowie’s 164. Only one yard separated the two teams total offensive output, with the Jackrabbits gaining a slight 287-286 edge in that category.

Wallace finished with 99 yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries; in second was Jacob Skinner, who rushed for 49 yards on six carries with a score. Wallace also completed eight passes for 123 yards. Peyton Price caught three passes for 53 yards, while Joey Crawford recorded a pair of catches for 37 yards.

Coheley completed seven passes for Howe, good for 78 yards and a touchdown. Andrew Griffin led Bulldog rushers with 80 yards, but Lee was the only other player to record a touchdown, rushing for 41 yards.

Bowie (1-1) remains home next week, hosting Henrietta for their homecoming. Howe, now in a 0-2 hole after also dropping their season opener against defending state champion Gunter, hits the road again next week for another tough task, taking on the Muenster Hornets.
