Sam Ehlinger is headed west.
The former Colts quarterback has signed a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos, adding depth behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham.
It’s a new chapter for Ehlinger, but his football story is already filled with memorable stops—from Westlake High in Austin to DKR Stadium in burnt orange.
Before the NFL, Ehlinger was a Texas legend. At Westlake, he broke school records for passing yards and touchdowns, topping names like Drew Brees and Nick Foles. He earned MaxPreps National Junior of the Year honors and committed to Texas as a four-star recruit in 2015.
He wasn’t just a stat-padder, either. Ehlinger was known for his leadership and toughness, playing through injuries and leading late-game drives that defined Westlake’s culture. His blend of grit and poise made him a fan favorite long before college scouts came calling.
At Texas, Ehlinger quickly became the face of the program. He passed for over 11,400 yards and 94 touchdowns, and added 33 rushing scores. His 2018 season was iconic—he led the Longhorns to a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia, scored three rushing TDs, and cemented his place among UT greats.
Ehlinger finished second only to Colt McCoy in multiple career records and was one of the most productive dual-threat QBs in school history. He left Texas holding records for consecutive passes without an interception, most games with a rushing and passing TD, and more.
Drafted by the Colts in the 6th round in 2021, Ehlinger saw limited action but made three starts in 2022. Now 26, he joins the Broncos to compete for a backup spot or serve as QB3. Despite other offers, he chose Denver and Sean Payton’s system—a chance to grow and stay in the league.
Whether he’s on the field or in the film room, Ehlinger brings leadership, resilience, and one of the strongest football résumés to ever come out of Texas. From Friday nights in Austin to bowl wins in January, he’s always shown up with grit.
