Frenship sparked a comeback a little too late in their season opener.
Last year, the Tigers began the season strong, emerging as a powerhouse with aspirations of making a run to Jerry’s World. However, uncertainty loomed over their playoff performance after finishing 3-2 in district play. They rolled over Eastwood in their first playoff game but faced a formidable opponent in Dallas powerhouse Southlake Carroll, losing 49-14. Despite this setback, Frenship retains most of their offensive weapons, notably Texas Tech wide receiver commit Leyton Stone, who is poised for a standout senior season.
Byron Nelson, on the other hand, completed an undefeated season last year, winning their district, and positioned themselves as a serious threat in 6A. In their playoff run, the Bobcats faced Southlake Carroll and suffered a loss of 56-7, bringing their season to an end.
Frenship took an early 21-0 lead in their season opener, but Byron Nelson responded in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 24-21 by halftime. The second half saw a back-and-forth scoring battle, with the Bobcats leading 35-31 after a close third quarter. The Bobcats gained momentum in the fourth, scoring 13 unanswered points and leading by six minutes remaining. However, Frenship’s quarterback Holden Phillips rallied his team, scoring 15 points, but they ultimately fell short, losing 48-46.
Next week, Byron Nelson will defend their home turf against Lewisville, who just won a dominant 51-7 over Mansfield Summit. Frenship aims to bounce back as it faces Memorial, which recently won 47-20.
