Friday night, Bellville traveled to Celina to take on the Bobcats in a highly anticipated matchup between two powerful 4A opponents. Celina, coming off a hot 2023 season (11-2), was looking to get back to the playoffs and advance farther than they did last year. Bellville, on the other hand, whose 2023 season ended with a loss in the state championship, was looking to kick off the season by making a statement against Celina.
Celina started the scoring off with a 19-yard rushing touchdown by wide receiver Cameron Edwards. For the rest of the first half, Celina and Bellville traded scores as the Bobcats went into halftime up 14-10. Bellville appeared to take control of the game as they started the second half strong with two rushing touchdowns. However, Celina scored the next 21 points, as Bellville did not have an answer for Celina’s run game.
Bellville was able to add one more touchdown, but Celina’s defense was outstanding as they forced multiple Bellville three-and-outs. Celina added a couple more touchdowns and ended up winning 49-30.
Next week, Celina travels to play a tough non-district opponent in La Vega, which is coming off a season-opening 45-15 win against Kennedale. Bellville will host Stafford, which lost 41-7 to Iowa Colony, as both teams look to enter the win column.
