Central’s Comeback Falls Short in 48-45 Loss to Amarillo

Eric Watson - CBS Insurance LLP - A Gallagher Company

The San Angelo Central Bobcats traveled to Amarillo on Friday, September 6, to face the Amarillo High Sandies. Central came out strong, with quarterback Christian English connecting twice with Jimmy Edwards for early touchdowns, giving the Bobcats a quick 14-0 lead. However, turnovers and penalties shifted the momentum. Amarillo capitalized on Central’s mistakes, including two interceptions and a blocked punt, to score 35 unanswered points by halftime, taking a 35-14 lead.

Amarillo extended their lead early in the second half to 48-14. Central struggled with turnovers, including another interception, but refused to give up. The Bobcats’ defense stepped up, preventing the Sandies from scoring again, and English led the offense on three consecutive touchdown drives, including a pass to Gavin Johnson and a swing pass to Jesse Smith.

Central converted four two-point conversions during their comeback, cutting the deficit to just three points with 1:50 remaining. Despite their best efforts, the Bobcats ran out of time.

The final score was 48-45, with Amarillo High barely hanging on. Central’s resilience in the second half showed their growth, and they look to carry this momentum into their next game against Abilene Cooper.
