Robert Griffin III will once again miss time with an injury following Cleveland’s loss against Philadelphia on Sunday. Griffin will be placed on injured reserve and per league rules must miss a minimum of eight games.
Griffin suffered a fractured coracoid bone in his non-throwing shoulder and is slated to be reevaluated in 3-4 weeks. The injury came off a play in the fourth quarter when Griffin was hit as he ran out of bounds by Eagles rookie Jalen Mills.
Griffin was checked on the sideline following the play. He had his helmet taken away briefly by the medical staff, but would return for the final three plays of the game and handed the ball off three times.
Griffin has yet to play a full 16-game schedule since his rookie year in 2012. His arduous journey includes a torn ACL and LCL suffered at the end of the 2012 season, being benched for the final three games of 2013 due to differences with then-head coach Mike Shanahan, a dislocated in ankle in 2014 where he missed half of the season, and a concussion sustained in 2015 and falling out of favor to Kirk Cousins.
Surgery is not immediately required for the injury and the team remains hopeful that it will not be needed. His earliest return date would be Nov. 10 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Now with RG3 sidelined the Browns will look to Josh McCown to be their man under center.
Griffin signed with the Browns in March to a two year deal worth $15 million in hopes to finally solidify the quarterback position for the Browns.
