College Station 26 – Denton Ryan 21
A determined rushing attack led by junior Marquise Collins and a relentless defensive effort propelled unbeaten College Station past Denton Ryan Friday night at Baylor’s McLane Stadium during a Class 5A Division I state quarterfinal contest.
Collins’ 5-yard touchdown run with 8:53 to go in the game helped seal the Cougars’ dramatic 26-21 triumph.
College Station (14-0) took a 20-7 lead in the third quarter following 41-yard score from Collins, but Ryan rebounded with several big plays to keep its hopes of back-to-back state championships alive.
The Raiders (12-2) saw Austin Jordan snag a 34-yard TD toss from Khalon Davis, and Anthony Hill Jr. put Ryan in front 21-20 after tallying a 59-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.
The Cougars answered almost immediately with Collins’ final TD of the night, and College Station’s defense stood tall from there by forcing a punt and a turnover on downs that sealed the win.
Ryan sputtered offensively for much of the game. Davis was picked off three times in the first half alone, as Kyle Walsh, Byron Johnson Jr. and A.J. Tisdell all notched interceptions prior to halftime for College Station.
Cougars kicker Dawson Schremp connected on a pair of field goals in the first half to stake his team to a 6-0 lead before Ryan’s Kalib Hicks used a 9-yard TD run to give the Raiders their first lead of the night.
College Station later jogged into the locker room at the half with a 13-7 lead following a 6-yard TD run from Collins, who capped his evening with 216 yards and three scores on 36 carries.
The Cougars are now set to collide with Mansfield Summit (11-3) in the 5A-I state semifinals.
