College Station Advances To Regional Final With Win Over Frisco Wakeland
The Frisco Wakeland Wolverines came into Friday’s Regional Semifinal against undefeated College Station knowing they would have to play mistake-free football to have a chance to win the game. A twenty-nine-second stretch to start the third quarter proved the difference as College Station pulled out 45-35 win in Corsicana.
Leading 17-7 at halftime, the Cougars would receive the second-half kickoff. After a breakdown in coverage on the Wakeland kickoff team, Nate Palmer returned the kick 101 yards for a touchdown. On the next Wolverine possession, Wakeland quarterback Brennan Myer was intercepted and College Station returned it to the two-yard line. This led to a 2-yard touchdown run from Paul Padron. In 29 seconds, the Cougars swung the game by 14 points.
The Second Half
The Wolverines did fight back. The third quarter was an instant classic with 7 combined touchdowns between the two teams. Wolverine receiver Davion Woolen had two touchdowns in the quarter, one on a 57-yard bomb from Myer, and the other on a half-back pass from running back Jared White. College Station countered with two rushing touchdowns, both by Marquise Collins.
The Wolverines continued to fight in the fourth quarter. After Myer went down with a knee injury, Will Schrotenboer threw an 80-yard touchdown to White to make it 45-35. That’s as close as it would get, as College Station was able to pick up some first downs and eventually run out the clock.
Collins was the star again for College Station. The workhorse running back finished with 235 yards and 3 touchdowns. Quarterback Jett Huff was an efficient 19-23 for 200 yards. For Wakeland, White ended his high school career with 141 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. Woolen, also a senior, had a huge day receiving with 138 yards to go with his two touchdowns.
College Station will now match up with Denton Ryan in the Region 2 championship Friday in Waco. The Raiders continued their postseason run with a big win over Longview yesterday. The Wolverines go into the offseason in rebuilding mode as they lose 16 senior starters.
