Cooper Pirates vs Coronado Mustangs Game Recap
On Friday night, district play started in the 806 as the Coronado Mustangs took on the Lubbock Cooper Pirates.
Lubbock Coronado Mustangs
The Mustangs struggled to work the ball through the air, as quarterback Dominic Parrish completed 6 of 11 passes for 27 yards, and rushed for 40 yards. Parrish connected with receivers Surreal Garrett for 23 yards on 3 catches, and Major Vera for 4 yards on 1 catch.
The rushing game proved to be more effective than the passing game, as Demarion Finch rushed for 51 yards on 8 carries, and Ty Jones rushed for 4 yards on 2 touches. The Mustang defense tried keeping their team in the game by forcing a few punts, but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs gave up 314 yards on the night. The Mustangs defense did force the Cooper center to snap the ball through the endzone, resulting in a safety, and the only points Coronado would score.
Lubbock Cooper Pirates
The Pirates were led by quarterback Ryan Rodriguez, as he completed 8 passes on 12 attempts for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns. Rodriguez connected through the air with Jayden Kennard on 1 catch for 45 yards and a touchdown. Rodriguez also connected with Jayden Hibbler, who had 41 yards on 2 catches and a touchdown, Gage Pickens, who caught a pass for 19 yards, and Michael Dever, who snagged 4 passes for 35 yards.
The Pirates were also able to dominate the ball on the ground. Jayden Hibbler rushed for 67 yards on 10 touches, Bransen Carlile rushed for 51 yards on 8 carries, and Jake Qualia, who had 12 yards on 3 touches, was able to find his way to the endzone. Along with being effective through the air, Rodriguez was also able to rush for 46 yards on just 2 touches. Michael Dever had 26 yards on his lone carry, and Jackson Austin, who had 19 yards on 3 touches, found himself in the endzone twice on the night. The Pirate’s defense played lights out, as they gave up just 111 yards total and allowed 0 points.
Cooper ran away from Coronado 35-2.
