Crawford needed less than a month to find its new head coach. After all, he was already a member of the Pirates staff.
Via a tweet Monday morning, Crawford ISD announced Greg Jacobs will be the new head coach and athletic director.
Jacobs was elevated from the position of offensive line coach.
The decision comes on the heels of longtime head coach Delbert Kelm’s announcement in late January to retire after 13 at the helm of Crawford’s program.
During the span, Kelm delivered an overall record of 130-14, reaching the state final in 2016, when the Pirates lost to Refugio 23-20.
Crawford went 9-4 last season, finishing second in the District 7-2A, Division I standings behind San Saba, and reached the third round of the playoffs, falling to eventual state semifinalist Valley View 33-14.
Next season, the Pirates will continue to compete in District 7-2A, Division I but it will not look the same with newcomers Bosqueville, Hamilton, Itasca, Rio Vista and Tolar entering to join remaining Valley Mills.
