Cy Springs began 2016 by winning a shootout over Conroe. The Panthers had a topsy-turvy season which culminated with a fourth consecutive 3-7 finish.
The Panthers showed they could score as they averaged nearly 41 points a game. Ah, the catch. They allowed 53 points a game, which included 62 or more in three straight games (Cy Ranch, Jersey Village, Langham Creek) late in the season.
Xayvion West had a productive junior season. The signal caller completed 64 percent of his passes for 2,695 yards and 23 touchdowns with just 8 interceptions. He split most of his productivity between receivers O’Shae Clark and Jah’marae Sheread, who combined for nearly 2,700 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Good news for Cy Springs is that the West-to-Sheread combo return for a senior season

Key Returners
QB Xayvion West, WR Jah’marae Sheread, DB Leon O’Neal, RB Taye Barber
West threw for nearly 2,700 yards and had 23 touchdowns on his was to being named first-team all-district quarterback. Sheread caught 60 passes for 1,239 yards and nine touchdowns, and he had 14 rushes for 141 yards.
O’Neal led the team last season with 86 tackles and two interceptions. Barber rushed for 241 yards, had 698 passing and 239 yards passing and averaged 130 yards of total offense a game.
Verdict
The Panthers averaged 40.7 points a game last season, and that number is certain to go even higher this year as the top running back and one of top receivers return along with West at quarterback.
Should the Panthers figure out ways to stop opposing offenses from lighting up the scoreboard, then they have a shot of breaking a playoff drought — and long string of losing seasons.
