Versatility Aided Texas S Commit DeMarvion Overshown’s Meteoric Rise

To dub Apr safety DeMarvion Overshown’s ascension to a borderline top 100 prospect and one of the nation’s most sought-after defensive backs as ‘meteoric’ would be an understatement.

At the time of Arp’s state semifinals loss to Boling on December 9, Overshown had just two offers to his name – UTSA and Texas. Fast-forward six months and Overshown holds upwards of 25 offers from some of the nation’s heavy-hitters, such as Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Florida, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and Nebraska, among others. More impressively, Overshown earned invitations to play at nearly every prominent program in the nation after just one season at safety in 2016 – a mind-boggling testament to Overshown’s sheer athleticism and versatility.

On May 31, though, the small-town product made it clear that the only offer that mattered was his first Power 5 scholarship with his commitment to Tom Herman and Texas.

So what exactly is Texas getting in Overshown as part of a trio that prompted Greg Powers of Scout.com to claim may be the best safety recruiting haul ever?

An intriguing physical specimen, Overshown is a 6’4, 200-pound bundle of football clay that ideally fits the mold of Todd Orlando’s defense in Austin.

Despite his current safety label, before anchoring Arp’s secondary as a junior, Overshown’s sophomore campaign was spent as a defensive and an outside linebacker. With BJ Foster and Caden Sterns Austin-bound, as well, the latter fits the description of what Overshown’s role at Texas will look like as part of what’s called a ‘B-Backer’ or boundary linebacker in Orlando’s defensive scheme.

Considering his skill set, Overshown’s transition to the Power 5 level should be fairly seamless, whether it be as a safety or outside linebacker.

With tremendous length and an ideal frame to build up, despite being fairly new to the secondary, Overshown boasts impressive instincts in and an innate aptitude to adjust to the ball in the air, largely due to solid body control and great leaping ability. Furthermore, Overshown flies to the ball really well in coverage and due to his time as a wide receiver, he’s proven capable of securing interceptions, as he did three times in 2016.

As far as his prowess in pursuit of the ball carrier is concerned, Overshown is best described as a punisher. Referring to Overshown as arguably the hardest hitting prospect in his class would hardly be a stretch, if not accurate, though he’s much more than just a violent brute force at the point of attack.

Overshown has a keen ability to track the ball well and displays amazing closing speed, along with a knack for knocking the ball loose when he gets into position. In short, he just plays instinctual football

Package all of the aforementioned into one high-level prospect and the result is 173 tackles and the 2016 District 9-3A Defensive MVP that’s already drawing comparisons to the great safety Sean Taylor – DeMarvion Overshown.
