Former Carrolton, Texas native, and current Kanas City Chiefs Tight End, Demetrius Harris is in some legal trouble after he was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Harris spent the 2016 season as a backup to Travis Kelce, catching 17 passes for 123 yards and one score.
Per the police report, “Harris, 25, was a passenger in a vehicle that stopped by the Missouri State Highway Patrol on Interstate 49 in Bates County around 4:22 p.m. He was taken to Bates County Jail, where he was booked and later released. Possession of 35 grams (1 1/4 ounces) or more is considered a felony in Missouri, punishable by up to seven years in prison and a fine of $10,000. Charges against Harris are pending.” (The Kanas City Star)
The report goes onto say, ““He was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped for a traffic violation,” Sgt. Bill Lowe told The Star. “The trooper recognized the odor of marijuana, and marijuana was located in his possession.”
The Chiefs signed Harris to a three-year extension back in January of 2016. This contract paid Harris one-million in his base salary last year, and will see the figure increase to $1.75 million in 2017 with a cap hit of $2.2 million. If the Chiefs would decide to move on from him they will have a “dead money” cap hit of $200 thousand, saving the franchise $2 million in salary cap.
The club has yet to comment on this manner so it is still up in the air on what the future holds for Harris and the Chiefs. With free agency opening up on March 9th, and the market flush with replacement tight ends should they cut Harris, a decision on the tight end would make sense if it would happen soon.
However, with no other prior arrests Harris may come off without facing the penalties of seven years in prison and a fine of $10,000. If that would be the case then the Chiefs may decide to keep him on their roster. Time will tell on what Kansas City will do with Harris after his arrest.
