Denton Guyer Holds Off Atascocita 46-35 to Stay Undefeated

In a battle of two of the best teams in Class 6A, it was Denton Guyer that came out on top in the end with a 46-35 hard-fought victory over Humble Atascocita.

The Wildcat defense intercepted a pass on the opening possession, resulting in favorable field possession very early in the game. A few plays later, Guyer QB Jackson Arnold scored on a short touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.

Arnold later hooked up with Sutton Lee on a 45-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0 Guyer late in the first quarter.

Atascocita scored 14 unanswered points of their own to tie the game at 14-14 going into half-time.

Midway through the third quarter, Guyer took back the lead on another short touchdown run from Jackson Foster to increase their lead to 20-14.

The Eagles scored and led for the first time in the game. The Wildcats answered right back with a 2-yard touchdown run from Byron Phillips to retake the lead at 27-21 with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter.

In the final period, the Eagles scored again to take a 28-27 lead. Then, Arnold completed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Grayson O’Bara.

Atascocita fumbled on their next possession and Guyer took advantage, scoring once more on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Arnold to Dylan Rivero to make the score 35-28.

Guyer added more points late in the fourth quarter and held off Atascocita to win 46-35.

Denton Guyer is now 4-0 and is averaging 35 points per game on offense. The Wildcats go on the road to take on McKinney on Sept. 24. Atascocita (3-1) takes on Humble next Friday at 7 PM.
