Denton Ryan was able withstand a late rally attempt by Colleyville Heritage with a defense that presented the Heritage offense quite a challenge and win 24-10 in AT&T Stadium.
Denton Ryan (14-0) controlled the tempo of the game on both sides of the ball despite some missed opportunities offensively. The defensive presence of Ryan hindered any movement on offense for Heritage as they were only limited to 80 total yards and three first downs in the first half.
Quarterback Spencer Sanders found his favorite target on the day in Gabriel Douglas at the 1:20 mark in the first quarter on a 24-yard touchdown pass to put Ryan up first with a score of 7-0. Ryan had 16 first downs in the first half, but had a hard time finding the end zone despite out gaining Heritage on offense 244 yards to 80. Heritage managed to contain Sanders in the first half and prevent him from making any big plays happen.
Heritage was able to swing a portion of momentum in their favor before going into intermission down 10-0 after a 28-yard field goal by Ryan’s Dillon McKnight. Defensive back Marcus Mosley was able to deflect a Spencer Sanders pass attempt in the end zone on 4th & 6 from their own 15-yard line to keep the game within reach.
Ryan came out and started the half with a drive that milked nine minutes and 20 seconds off the clock that culminated in Spencer Sanders hooking up with Gabriel Douglas once again this time from 8 yards out.
“Part of our plan was to keep their offense staying on the sideline,” said Denton Ryan head coach Dave Henigan. “It was just guys executing and winning the battles up front. We challenged our guys to win the battle upfront physically this week and feel like that would give us the opportunity to win the game and we controlled the line of scrimmage which was the difference.”
Colleyville Heritage hanging on to their playoff lives did not get on the board until the fourth quarter with a 27-yard field goal and facing a 17-3 deficit with under six minutes in the game brought the score within a touchdown after quarterback Cam Roane connected with running back Michael Young on a jump pass for a 58-yard touchdown. Ryan responded with a touchdown as Tyreke Davis ran the ball in for a touchdown at the 1:53 mark and seal the deal for Denton Ryan.
Denton Ryan is set to face Highland Park in the 5A DI State Semifinals at 1:30 p.m. in Frisco’s Ford Center at The Star.
