Denton Ryan Rolls to Key District Win over Frisco Wakeland
After jumping out to a 3-0 start to the season, the Wakeland Wolverines came into their game against Denton Ryan flying high and confident. They quickly came back down to earth, with a 27-3 loss to the Raiders in Denton Thursday night.
The Raiders did what they do best, run the ball and play great defense. Running back Kalib Hicks, who has been the workhorse for the Raiders, started the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter.
Wakeland Falls to Denton Ryan
The Wakeland offense couldn’t get on track in the first quarter, with three punts in three possessions.
The Raiders extended their lead early in the second quarter, as quarterback Khalon Davis threw a short pass to Jordyn Bailey, who took it 52 yards for a touchdown.
Wakeland was able to get some positive’s on offense in the second quarter, as a 10 play drive ended in a field goal. The Wolverines had another chance late in the first half.
An interception by Davion Woolen had them in position to put points on the board before halftime, but the Wolverines were unable to convert, and the half ended at 14-3.
Denton Ryan Scores More in the 2nd Half
Ryan didn’t take long to add points in the second half, as Garyreon Robinson returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a Ryan TD.
The Wolverines were able to move the ball some in the third quarter, but never able to convert to points. The defense kept Wakeland in the game by forcing two fumbles.
Ryan put it away early in the fourth quarter with a 21-yard touchdown run from Hicks.
Denton Ryan Defense Wreaks Havoc
The Ryan D was once again led by 5-star linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. who was all over the field and harassed QB Brennan Myer all night. Hicks continued his huge season with 208 yards and two touchdowns.
Wakeland (3-1, 2-1) looks to get back on track next week against Frisco Heritage. Meanwhile, Ryan (4-1, 3-0) has a bye.
