The DeSoto eagles remained unbeaten at 3-0 thanks to some last second heroics by one Shawn Robinson. Battling a rugged West Texas opponent on the road in Midland, the DeSoto Eagles managed to escape the Midland Bulldogs 49-43 at Grande Communications Stadium.
Midland was able to compete neck-and-neck with the TexasHSFootball No.1-ranked team as Midland pushed the score to take the lead 43-41 on a 51-yard field goal with 1:53 left. DeSoto now on their heels and on the fringe of losing their first game were led by Shawn Robinson facing the last minute deficit.
Robinson was able to engineer a drive that culminated in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Robinson to receiver Laviska Shenault to put DeSoto back up 49-43 with only 28 seconds to spare. Midland on the ensuing drive would try to muster some more fourth quarter magic. They managed to get down to the DeSoto 30-yard line with 3 seconds left. Quarterback Jackson Anuszkiewicz had been a problem for DeSoto with his three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown on the night. Looking to add one more to his total and win the game, he threw up a deep ball that ended up being be batted down in the end zone to end the game.
As great of a game Anuszkiewicz had, Shawn Robinson had a better game. 17 completions on 33 attempts was good for 276 yards and four passing touchdowns. Robinson again showed his dual-threat capabilities with 203 rushing yards on 18 attempts and three rushing touchdowns. Robinson finished with 479 yards of total offense and seven total touchdowns.
Midland’s next opponent will be a road matchup against Keller High School. DeSoto heads into this week with a bye on the schedule.
