The Cypress Bridgeland Bears, coming off last weeks 35-28 win over Cypress Woods, climbed into our Top 10 to be the #9 ranked team in Texas. After a 3-7 2018, the Bears improved to 8-3 last year and showed they are a program on the rise. Though they weren’t in most of the Top 25 rankings to start the season, 5 games in they are all the way up to #9. But, are they still underrated?
The game that caused everyone to recognize and respect the Bears was their week two 27-21 win over Alvin Shadow Creek. The Sharks of Alvin Shadow Creek started the season in the top 3-5 in the state in most rankings. They followed that up with a 42-8 dominate performance over Langham Creek. Their offense was proving to be very strong, and their defense, though giving up some yards in some games, consistently got big stops anytime they needed one. The gamer against Cypress Ranch was going to be a measuring stick as the Mustangs were coming off back to back wins in which they outscored their opponents 81-7.
Cypress Bridgeland took care of business.
The Bears Junior Quarterback continued his solid play. Conner Weigman was 16 of 29 for 207 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 90 yards. He’s averaging 291 yards passing per game this year. He led the Bears to a quick start, going up 24-0 in the first half. Worth noting, Dylan Goffney, the Southern Methodist commit, who has been battle injuries, came back and looked healthy as he made the biggest play of the Bears opening touchdown drive. The Bears offense should only improve from here.
Cypress Woods did fight back in the second half. They outscored Cypress Bridgeland 17-5 in the second half. They had the ball down 29-17 in the fourth quarter, but an interception by Conner Motsinger closed the game for the Bears.
FINAL SCORE: Cypress Bridgeland 29 – Cypress Ranch 17
The Bears will likely climb another spot or two in our rankings next week. Their next game is against Cypress Park. The Cypress Park Tigers are currently 3-1 and play Cypress Falls tonight. The Cy Ranch Mustangs, now 2-2, will look to go over.500 when they face Cypress Woods next week. The Cypress Woods Wildcats are 3-2 having beat Langham Creek 42-35 last night.
