District Picks 31-6A: It’s Going To Be A Good Year For Edinburg Vela

Even as one of the newest schools in the Valley, the Vela Sabercats have already established themselves as one of the top teams in District 31-6A.

John Campbell takes over the reigns of a team that loses several top starters but the offense will be loaded thanks to quarterback Nate Garcia and receivers Brandon Guzman and Justin Cantu. Edinburg High should provide a stiff challenge but I like the Sabercats to come out of this district with the title.

Prediction: Edinburg Vela

Jonathan Rodriguez

Vela has an arsenal loaded with offensive firepower with options from quarterback Nate Garcia to wide receiver Brandon Guzman and tight end Nico Rodriguez. The offensive line has some voids due to graduation and the running game will have to replace Christian Flores but Vela will press on and find the replacements needed.

Defensively they will have defensive back Nick Enriquez patrolling the skies and defensive end Ralph Montemayor lining up on the outside edge providing a pass rush.

New head coach John Campbell will have lots of horsepower to rev up this Edinburg Vela engine and I expect them to have a smooth ride this year and come out on top in the district.

Prediction: Edinburg Vela

Hunter Cooke

I like new head coach John Campbell’s Sabercats, but I don’t think it’s an easy path. Nothing in that district will be given freely, but if anyone comes out of it, it’s Edinburg Vela. Nate Garcia is a solid quarterback, and I like what I’ve seen on Hudl of Timothy Ellington and Nick Enriquez on the defensive side of the ball. The path to the district title in this neck of the woods will run squarely through the Sabercats’ backyard.

Prediction: Edinburg Vela
