District 32-6A should provide some dram and fireworks this season. With 8 returning starters on defense, Weslaco East should be right in the mix in 2017. Meanwhile, over in Harlingen, the Cardinals should be strong again under head coach Manny Gomez.

Ultimately, I think San Benito does have the best odds to win the district title this year. Erick Retta is a solid signal caller while running back Tyrone Harper is a name that more people should know about outside of South Texas. Last year’s title came down to The Battle of the Arroyo between Harlingen and San Benito with Harlingen coming out on top. I see a reversal in 2017 with the Greyhounds taking home the title.

Prediction: San Benito

Hunter Cooke

Call me crazy, but I’m taking Weslaco East to win this district.

I like Roy Pedraza, I like Richard LeFevre, and I like that they return eight starters on defense. No one else in their district returns as many on defense, and the only unit that returns more than them is Brownsville Rivera’s offense. I like Mike Burget’s team to break through and shock San Benito and Harlingen.

Prediction: Weslaco East

Cody Daniel

San Benito fell just three points short of a district title in 2016 with a 29-27 loss to Harlingen in the Battle of the Arroyo. The loss became the first blemish on what was otherwise a perfect season at the cost of a district championship.

In 2017, though, San Benito returns no shortage of talent while Harlingen will be tasked with replacing key contributors all over the field and a outright district title should be in the Greyhounds future. With a core of quarterback Erick Retta, running back Tyrone Harper, wide receiver Isaiah Trevino returning offensively and guys like defensive end Ryan Reza and safety Payne Guajardo returning defensively, San Benito’s influx of experienced talent should be enough to finally surpass Harlingen in District 32-6A.

Prediction: San Benito
