Do You Believe in Unicorns?
We had what many are calling a big upset in the first week of the Texas HS Football season. The team most have ranked as #1 or #2 in 5A, the Denton Ryan Raiders, started their season with a loss. However, it was to a 6A team that went 9-3 last year and should have an even better roster than last season.
Not a lot of people noticed the New Braunfels Unicorns going 9-3 last year, after several seasons of being a game below or above .500. They flirted with being a Top 25 team in our rankings for most of the second half of the 2021 season. And, as our 2022 debut rankings are set to be released next week, we already planned to have them in our Top 25. We may need to move them up a spot or two.
The Unicorns knocked off the Raiders, 34-33 on Thursday night.
Denton Ryan has two of the top at their positions in the state at QB and RB with Khalon Davis and Kalib Hicks. The duo helped lead the Raiders to a 33-14 lead early in the second half. New Braunfels rallied.
The Unicorns had a long 14-play 76-yard drive in the third quarter to cut the lead down to two scores. They added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Then, they went on a 17-play 86-yard drive for the go-ahead touchdown. The Raiders did drive down the field with a minute to go, but the Unicorn’s defense intercepted a Davis pass to seal the victory.
New Braunfels will play Seguin next week at home. Denton Ryan will travel to Azle.
