An Alvin High School student is getting a lot of attention for bringing her soccer talents to the football field. Erin Webster was the kicker for Alvin’s varsity football team in the Yellow Jackets’ 50-14 win over Pasadena on Friday.
“My dad always had me and my sisters participate in Punt, Pass, and Kick when we were younger,” Webster said. “I wanted to contribute to the team and at the same time be an example to my little sister, Hanna, that girls can be tough and still be girls.”
Webster wasn’t the first girl to score in a 6A football game last Friday night when she made an extra point but she is among very few women in Texas high school football. Just from the looking at the video the kick had very good distance and would’ve been good from well beyond at least 40 yards.
Webster tore her ACL in May and recently recovered from surgery, which is why she hasn’t been playing all year. Webster is a multi-sport athlete, with her main sport being Soccer. Webster is a standout on the soccer field; she is a three-time varsity Letterman, MVP all 3 years for District Goalkeepers, 1st team all-district all 3 years and 2nd Team All Region last year, and has received multiple scholarship offers. She also plays varsity tennis, but had to miss this season due to her knee injury. Oh, and she is in the top 5% of her class.
“It seems like I have gotten support from the whole town of Alvin. My friends have always been there for me from the very beginning. The guys on the team treat me like any other player, which I love.” Webster said, when asked how the support has been and where it is coming from.
If you’re thinking Webster will just be a high school kicker, she might have other plans in mind for her future.
“I think if I continued to work hard and was competitive with my kicks, I might have a shot. It is all about being an asset to the team and contributing,” Webster said.
Alvin’s next game is Thursday against South Houston High School. Alvin is looking to finish the season 6-4 and head to the playoffs on a 2 game winning streak. Erin Webster should be out there Thursday night kicking for the Yellow Jackets. Hopefully we will get to see more of Webster in this game.
