Byron Eaton, one of Dallas’s most decorated high school athletes, is returning to lead the next generation—this time on the football field. As first reported by Matt Stepp of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Eaton has been named the head football coach at Dallas Gateway Charter Academy.
Eaton isn’t new to the gridiron. While many remember him for his basketball heroics at Dallas Lincoln, where he was a four-year starter and two-time state champion, he also quarterbacked the Tigers to the 2004 state title game in football. A two-sport standout, Eaton’s leadership and competitiveness have long defined him.
After graduating, Eaton went on to star at Oklahoma State from 2005 to 2009. He played in 135 games for the Cowboys, scoring over 1,200 career points while dishing out more than 500 assists. He was known for his toughness, clutch play, and ability to lead under pressure—traits he now brings to the sidelines.
Gateway, a TAPPS 2A program, is coming off a tough stretch in recent seasons, including a winless 2023 campaign. The program has struggled with consistency and roster depth, but Eaton’s arrival signals a new era. With his deep ties to Dallas and reputation for motivating young athletes, Gateway is hoping to turn the corner.
Eaton’s hire marks a fresh start for the Gators and brings a renewed energy to the program. Known for demanding excellence and building strong team culture, he is expected to make an immediate impact.
Practice is set to begin this spring as Eaton gets to work building his roster and implementing his vision. With his roots in Dallas, competitive edge, and proven leadership, Byron Eaton’s return to high school football is a big win for Gateway and Texas high school sports.
