Cleburne ISD Names Former UTEP Star A.J. Sheppard as Head Football Coach
Cleburne ISD has announced A.J. Sheppard as the new head football coach for the Yellow Jackets, signaling a fresh start for a program in need of revitalization. Sheppard, a Mansfield High School graduate and former UTEP defensive captain, brings an impressive résumé as both a player and coach to his new role. The decision comes after a rigorous search that drew nearly 100 applicants, with Sheppard emerging as the choice to lead Cleburne back to prominence.
Sheppard starred as a defensive leader during his time at UTEP, helping the Miners secure their first bowl game appearance in over a decade. He earned All-WAC honors in 2000 and was inducted into the UTEP Football Hall of Fame in 2020. Following his collegiate success, Sheppard transitioned to a distinguished career in coaching and education. Most recently, he served as the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Mansfield Lake Ridge. He also held coaching roles at Mansfield Summit and Trinity High School, where he developed a reputation for building disciplined and effective defenses.
Sheppard takes over a Cleburne program that has struggled in recent years. The Yellow Jackets posted an 0-10 record last season and have a combined record of 3-27 over the past three seasons. With the resignation of former head coach Jim Woodard earlier this month, Cleburne ISD sought a leader capable of not only turning around the football team but also uniting the school and community.
As an educator, Sheppard has earned multiple accolades, including being named El Paso ISD Teacher of the Year (2023-2024), Lake Ridge High School Teacher of the Year (2020-2021), and Mansfield ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year (2020-2021). His ability to inspire both on and off the field aligns with Cleburne ISD’s vision for the future of the program.
The road ahead won’t be easy, but Sheppard’s track record suggests he is ready for the challenge. Combining his leadership skills, defensive expertise, and commitment to fostering a positive culture, he will look to rebuild the Yellow Jackets into a competitive force.
