Fort Worth Brewer came into week 2 looking to redeem themselves after a tough loss to Georgetown 36-20 in week one. Weatherford, also coming off a loss to Fort Worth Arlington Heights 31-27, looked to take advantage of a raucous home field crowd to get in the win column of Friday night.
In the 1st quarter, Junior QB Carson Ingram came out on fire going 4 of 5 on their 1st drive. Ingram connected with Junior WR Jahrad Taylor for 6 with 7:54 left in the 1st quarter to give the Bears the early lead 7-0. Ingram passed for 221 yards and two TDS on the night. Brewer’s defense set the tone in the 1st quarter by forcing Weatherford to punt on its 1st three possessions.
In the 2nd quarter at the 2:54 mark, Kangaroo QB Corbin Campbell got them on the board with an option keeper for 30 yards to even the score at 7-7. Late in the second quarter with Weatherford driving into Bear territory, Campbell threw the 1st of his two interceptions on the night to (CB) Jeshaun Patton who killed the Weatherford momentum. Patton’s interception set up a 15-yard burst up the gut by Senior RB Christian Calton to give the Bears the lead at halftime 14-7. Calton bruised up the Weatherford defense for 105 yards and one TD.
After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Corbin Campbell decided to air it out to Dominic Davi on a 61-yard bomb with less than five minutes remaining in the 4th quarter to bring the Weatherford faithful to their feet. After both teams exchanged penalties on the extra point try, William Gonzales got the Bear defense to jump offsides and he took advantage and broke around the right side of the defense to tack on two points. Kangaroos lead 15-14 with less than three minutes left in the 4th quarter.
After the kickoff and a couple of costly penalties moved Brewer into Weatherford territory, Carson Ingram hit WR/CB Curtis Taylor III for a game clinching 13-yard score to put the Bears in front 21-16. Taylor III displayed great concentration on the catch, with a defender draped on his back, he made a clutch one handed snag. But Taylor III wasn’t done.
Corbin Campbell and his Kangaroos offense wouldn’t go down without a fight. He lead the Weatherford offense to the Bear 26 yard line only to toss his 2nd interception of the night to Curtis Taylor III, who showed off his versatility by also playing cornerback with the game on the line, with .39 seconds left in the 4th quarter. Final score Brewer wins a nail biter 21-15.
The Bears defense contained the Weatherford offense for much of the night led by defensive standouts (DE) Marcel Paige, (DL) Keyvon White and DB Preston Hampton-Kelley, who made several key 3rd down tackles to stall out several Weatherford drives throughout the game.
