Week two of the 2017 high school football season kicks off with the Brewer Bears heading west to take on the Weatherford Kangaroos. Both teams started the season with losses to Georgetown(Brewer) and Fort Worth Arlington Heights(Weatherford), both of whom were playoff teams in 2016.
Fort Worth Brewer
The Bears had a tough timein Week 1 slowing down Georgetown in a 36-20 loss. Coach Wade Griffin and the Bears are coming off a 4-7 season, where Brewer exited the playoffs in the bi-district round for 2nd year in a row.
Junior WR Jahrad Taylor is coming into week 2 on fire, after catching two TD passes from Carson Ingram and making several highlight reel catches. Running backs Curtis Taylor III and Christian Calton are two playmakers for the Bears offense, who can explode at any moment.
Defensively, Brewer gave up 36 points in week one against Georgetown. The Bears come into this game looking to redeem themselves against a potent Kangaroo running game. (DE) Marcel Page, (LB) Branson Dail, (DB)Laurent Swanson and (DB) Preston Hampton-Kelly are key defensive returners.
Weatherford
The Kangaroos lost a close game in week one 31-27 to Fort Worth Arlington Heights. Head Coach Billy Mathis, who was previously the defensive coordinator for the Aledo Bearcats, got the Weatherford running game going against the Yellowjackets.
Matt Gray ran for 166 yards on 20 carries with a TD. QB Corbin Campbell added two short rushing TDs for the Kangaroo offense. Defensively, the Kangaroos gave up 329 total yards against Arlington Heights. Weatherford returns eight defensive starters in 2017.
Brewer won in 2016 in Fort Worth 28-14.
