Frisco Holds on for Big District Win Over Frisco Heritage
All eyes were on The Star in Frisco Thursday night as Frisco High and Frisco Heritage squared off in a game with huge playoff implications for District 6 in 5A Division 1.
Both teams came into the game undefeated in district play. The first quarter was extremely sloppy as both teams committed two turnovers. Heritage kicked a field goal, and Frisco got a 54-yard punt return from Jordon Hamilton, and Frisco held a 7-3 lead.
Things got ugly late in the first quarter. After a late hit on Heritage QB Bryce Gilchrist, a massive brawl ensued that lasted around 15 minutes. When everything was said and done, 5 players were ejected, including Gilchrist, as well as Hamilton and Frisco star Linebacker Brandon Miyazono, an SMU commit. This left both teams with big holes on both sides of the ball.
Frisco got on the board again in the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown run from Kam Pendergraph. Heritage was able to strike back, as backup quarterback Kameron Franklin hit Jaycob McDaniel for an eleven-yard touchdown. Frisco took a 14-10 lead to halftime.
Frisco’s special teams struck again in the third quarter as Ismael Taylor took a punt back 43 yards for a touchdown. Heritage scored on an amazing catch by Houston Brookshire for a touchdown, cutting the score to 20-17.
Heritage had a chance late, as they stopped Frisco inside the five with two minutes left. The Coyotes weren’t able to get the ball in field goal range and eventually turned it over on downs as the Racoons held on for the 20-17 win.
Frisco (6-1, 5-0) find themselves in a good position in the district, but still has tough games remaining against Reedy, Lone Star, and Wakeland. Heritage (6-2, 5-1) gets a week off, and they’ll have to regroup quickly as they finish the season with Reedy and Lone Star, in what should be a thrilling race to the playoffs.
