Frisco Wakeland went into Friday night’s first-round playoff game against Woodrow Wilson with one goal-winning playoff game for the first time in five years. The Wolverines accomplished the goal in dominant fashion, beating Wilson 38-7 at Forester Field in Dallas.
Wakeland came out hot on the first possession. Quarterback Brennan Myer hit Ashdyn Kahouch for a long pass, putting Wakeland in the red zone, but the Wilson defense stepped up and held the Wolverines to a field goal.
Neither team was able to get much going offensively. Wakeland finally broke through in the second quarter with a touchdown run on an end-around by receiver Noah Mangum. Late in the first half, Myer took it in from 19 yards out. Wilson was able to get on the board late in the first half on a touchdown pass from Cam McGuire to Noah Calhoun. The driver was aided by 45 yards in Wakeland penalties. Wakeland led 17-7 at the half.
The second half featured the two constants we’ve seen out of Wakeland all season-Jared White and the defense. The senior running back continued his incredible season with 248 yards and three touchdowns. The Wolverine D forced two turnovers, including a nice interception by senior Linebacker Michael Flanagan.
The win was a big one for Wakeland (8-2), as it was their first playoff win since 2016, and only the third playoff win in program history. Things don’t get any easier for the Wolverines, as they’ll travel to Allen Friday night to take on perennial powerhouse Highland Park. The Scots are coming off a big 45-13 win over New Caney, and have won ten games in a row after a season-opening loss to 6A Southlake Carroll.
Wilson finishes the season with an 8-3 record after finishing second in their district.
