Frisco Wakeland Upsets Frisco Lone Star
About 2 miles separate Lone Star High and Wakeland High, so the schools naturally have a geographic rivalry. On the field though, it’s been very lopsided as Wakeland had never beat Lone Star. That ended last night as the Wolverines dominated the Rangers 38-10 at the Ford Center.
Wakeland quarterback Brennan Myer led the way for the Wolverines, as he played his best game of the season throwing for 277 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. His favorite target was his tight end and SMU commit Tripp Riordan as he finished with 101 yards and 1 touchdown.
Lone Star hung in the game early, in spite of losing quarterback Gabriel Barrientes to an apparent knee injury. Wakeland jumped on the board first with a three-yard pass from Myer to Riordan. Lone Star came right back as backup quarterback Bennett Fryman threw a short pass to Arkansas commit Jaylon Braxton, and Braxton took it 62 yards to the house. Lone Star kicked a field goal early in the second quarter for a 10-7 lead, but that is all they would score as the rest of the game was dominated by Wakeland.
A Lone Star fumble led to a quick score for the Wolverines as Cooper Snyder took it in from 22 yards out. Then right before halftime, the Wolverines got another big defensive play as Steel Littlejohn picked off Fryman as the Rangers were driving. Three plays later, Myer hit Hayden O’Neal on a 36-yard touchdown and a 21-10 lead at halftime.
Lone Star couldn’t get anything going offensively in the second half with a couple of punts and 2 turnovers. The Wolverines offense continued to be in rhythm with touchdowns from Snyder and Colby Perkes.
The win puts Wakeland (2-3, 1-2) back in the playoff hunt in District 6-5A. They get a week off with their bye coming next week. Lone Star (2-2, 0-2) now finds themselves with their back up against the wall as they have yet to win a game in district. They take on Frisco Liberty next week, hoping to break the two-game losing streak.
