We have a battle of two of the top teams in the state who are both moving up our Top 25 Rankings (CLICK HERE for the full rankings). The Southlake Carroll Dragons, who both DCTF and us have ranked #7, travel to play the Rockwall Yellow Jackets, who we have ranked #12 and DCTF has ranked #13.
Southlake Carroll was in everyone’s top 10 going into the season. They slid a bit in some rankings only because they did not play their first game until this past Friday, October 2 in which they beat Rockwall-Heath 72-57. The Dragons are led by Quinn Ewers, the #1 Ranked Junoir in the country and Texas Longhorn commit. Against Rockwall-Heath, he threw for 388 yards and 5 touchdowns. Their offense was already in mid-season form. Their defense did struggle a bit, giving up 57 points to a Hawks team that is coming off of a 5-5 season, though the Hawks did put up 72 points in week one against Lewisville. Perhaps the Hawks offense will put up 50+ against everyone this year, but the Dragons will need a better performance on defense to beat the #12 team in the state of Texas.
The Rockwall Yellow Jackets are 2-0 on the season, both games on the road, and have put up two really good offensive performances. They beat Denton Braswell 59-40 and Dallas Jesuit 60-38. Rockwall is looking to improve on a 12-3 season last year that saw them go all the way to the 6A-Division I state semifinals. Similar to Southlake Carroll, the Yellow Jackets have a high octane offense and a few questions on defense. Going into the season, the loss of now Ohio State wide-receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba left some questions on offense. Though Quarterback Braedyn Locke seems to have the offense humming. Locke is coming off of a 4,200 yards passing / 53 touchdown season. The skill position players are looking good and the Yellow Jackets have a very good offensive line.
This game might come down to which team can put together a couple of defensive stops in a row. This should be a very high scoring game and we’d be surprised if both teams don’t score over 35 points.
