Week four in 4A football brings a clash of top 15 undefeated’s in the form of #16 the Gilmer Buckeyes versus #6 the Carthage Bulldogs. The Bulldogs will be playing host to this matchup at Bulldog Stadium, where they haven’t been defeated since their season opener against Halletsville last season.
The Bulldog offense, led by quarterback Kason Davis, has been productive to begin the year, averaging just under 29 points per game. Davis has thrown for 671 yards, seven touchdowns and just one interception through his first two games of the season. Beside him in Carthage’s spread offense is running back Keaontay Ingram. Ingram has complimented Davis nicely, rushing for 242 yards and two touchdowns so far in his junior campaign.
While the offense has played solid, Carthage’s defense is the real story. Over the past few years, the Bulldogs have been known for putting up big numbers through the air; however, their defense has allowed just 33 points over the year, including holding offensive powerhouse Liberty-Eylau to a mere 20 points. Though this defense has shown itself to be stout, the Gilmer Buckeyes offense presents an entirely new challenge to the Bulldogs.
With quarterback Aaron “Poppy” Brown at the helm, this high powered Buckeye offense has been able to score over 64 points per game throughout their first three contests. Brown, who has already eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the season, has also set a school single-game passing record with his 577 yard performance against Libery-Eylau. Though the Gilmer defense hasn’t been convincing so far, all that they have to do is contain Kason Davis, and hope Aaron Brown and the rest of the Buckeye offense can finish the job.
