The Golden Triangle was the site of one of the most anticipated games in the state Friday night as the Hitchcock Bulldogs (3-1) visited the Silsbee Tigers (4-0). Hitchcock is coming off one of the most impressive wins of the year, defeating Bellville 21-14, making a statement that they are a contender in 3A-D1. Silsbee has been very consistent, handling all four of their games with ease, including a 27-13 win over Beaumont West Brook last week. Friday night’s game was a litmus test for both teams, facing off against a state-ranked team from a different division.
Game Recap
Hitchcock received the opening kick and got the scoring started. The Bulldogs marched down the field, and Lloyd Jones III eventually found Chase Bruton for a 4-yard touchdown, giving Hitchcock a 7-0 lead. On Silsbee’s first drive, the ball hit the turf and was recovered by Hitchcock’s Da’John Anderson, setting the Bulldogs up with great field position. However, Hitchcock couldn’t capitalize and turned the ball over on downs, giving it back to Silsbee. The Tigers responded with a methodical drive, eating up over six minutes of the clock. After 13 plays, Silsbee’s Jeremiah Read kicked a 26-yard field goal, making the score 7-3 Hitchcock with 2:07 left in the first quarter.
On the next Hitchcock snap, a fumbled exchange was recovered by Silsbee’s Matsyn Morris, setting the Tigers up at the Bulldog 24-yard line. However, Hitchcock’s defense stood strong, making a big 4th-down stop inside their own five-yard line to keep the lead.
Hitchcock punted on their next drive, giving Silsbee the ball at the Bulldog 41-yard line. Two plays later, Mikey Moshier’s pass was intercepted by Keidyn Evans and returned for a pick-six, extending Hitchcock’s lead to 14-3. Silsbee responded with a 10-play drive, capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Moshier to Matsyn Morris, cutting the deficit to four with 4:31 left in the half.
After another Hitchcock punt, Moshier’s pass was once again intercepted by Evans, this time run out of bounds at the Tiger 11-yard line. It took Hitchcock just one play to capitalize as Lloyd Jones III found Terrell Allen for an 11-yard touchdown. After a Silsbee punt, Hitchcock struck again before halftime, with Jones connecting with Bruton for an 18-yard touchdown. Hitchcock went into the half leading 28-10.
Second Half Dominance
The second half began with both teams trading turnovers on downs and a Silsbee punt. Hitchcock then got the ball and found the end zone again, with Jones connecting with Bruton for a 56-yard touchdown. On the next Bulldog drive, Jones took it in himself from six yards out, making the score 42-10, which would stand as the final.
Hitchcock made a big statement in 3A D-1, dominating Silsbee 42-10.
