Houston had previous moved all football operations to the University of Texas-Austin. The game was to be played in the Alamodome and even yesterday it looked like the game was going to happen.
UTSA coach Frank Wilson had said on Monday in his press confernce“They’re in Austin preparing. We’re here preparing. Certainly, our thoughts and prayers; we’re conscientious of the natural disaster that just happened. Of course, that’s on your mind. But you continue to prepare for the game.”
The extreme flooding in the Houston area would have prevented the Cougars from returning to Houston before the game and officials on both sides felt it would be best to postpone the game. Both teams will now look to either meet at another time, or file a waiver to the NCAA waiving the game and allowing them bowl eligibility with five wins instead of six.
Houston will now open the season in Tucson, Arizona against the University of Arizona, while UTSA will travel to Waco to face the Baylor Bears on September 9th, looking to get their first win against a Power Five team. All other Houston area teams look to be playing this week, Houston Baptist and Lamar will travel to Texas State and North Texas, respectively.
