We asked last week who you thought would win the 6A-Division 1 state title. While North Shore and Duncanville were most people’s picks, Lake Travis was the third pick. We had Lake Travis at #7 in the state in our rankings, and had them in our top 4 most of the season. The one thing keeping us from ranking Lake Travis higher was that they had only played six games, winning them all, and they had not played a game in three weeks.
Round Rock came into this game at 7-2, but were a huge underdogs. At no point in the year did we consider the Dragons for our Top 25 in the state. You could call it rust with Lake Travis not having played in three weeks, but the truth is, Round Rock outplayed them and controlled the game. Though the Dragons have made the playoffs 23 times in the school’s history, this might be their biggest win in school history.
Round Rock, thanks to Cavalier turnovers, jumped off to an early lead. But, Lake Travis tied it at 21 with an Isaac Norris touchdown run. It looked like Lake Travis had gained control of the game and would overcome an upset bid by the Dragons, but Round Rock fought right back and took over the game. Quarterback Seth Ford threw a touchdown to take the 28-21 lead. Then, on a trick play flea-flicker in the 4th quarter, the Dragons scored again to push the lead to 35-21. Form there, the Dragons defense did the rest and shut Lake Travis down in the 4th quarter to secure the win.
FINAL SCORE: Lake Travis 21 – Round Rock 35
Up next for Round Rock is the Cibolo Steele Knights. The Knights just beat San Antonio Madison 50-3. The Knights are a team that was in our Top 10 to start the year, but they dropped their first two games of the season, then dropped a third game late in the season to Converse Judson. They are a very talented team with a tough defense and it will be one of the toughest games this round to predict.
