The David Gibbs Experiment Is Beginning To Show Progress
Texas Tech’s defense has been worse than atrocious. Many would insert “especially on the ground” here, but the reality is that the only reason teams don’t pule yards on Texas Tech through the air is that it’s slightly safer to just run it. Today, we saw some flashes of defensive coordinator David Gibbs’s bend-but-don’t-break philosophy is beginning to pay off slightly, as Texas Tech made some crucial stops that were aided by questionable Texas playcalling.
D’Onta Foreman Will End You
Yes, Texas Tech’s defense is bad. Don’t count out Texas’s big running back, though. He racked up 341 yards on a terrible Texas Tech defense, but he’s the real deal whether he’s running on Texas Tech or Kansas State. He’s had a great season so far, and is going to be crucial for Texas down the stretch.
Patrick Mahomes Is Human
It’s common to see people talking about Patrick Mahomes in either ridiculously hyperbolic or intensely degrading ways. The Texas Tech quarterback is either the reincarnation of Michael Vick, destined for greatness, or just another system quarterback who would struggle in a REAL conference like the SEC or the Big Ten.
He’s in the middle, people. He’s an incredible quarterback who takes immense risks, and is good enough to make those risks minimal. He’s not a Greek God, he’s a very good quarterback with lots of room to grow. He’s also not a system quarterback either, his downfield eyes, footwork, and arm strength are all NFL-caliber. He’s a human being who happens to be incredible at playing the game of football.
Big 12 Officiating Is Questionable At Best
I’m not one to blame officiating for a loss. I personally think that’s the mindset of the mentally weak, and that if you blame the refs for losing a game, you have arrogance issues that might need to be examined.
The officiating in this game wasn’t partisan. No one team was blatantly given the shaft. Both teams were, in equal measure, the benefactors and on the receiving end of bad calls. I don’t think it affected the outcome of the game, but it came closer to it than any game I’ve ever seen.
Texas Tech Might Not Make A Bowl Game
The Red Raiders are sitting at 4-5, with games against Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Baylor next. Not even the game against Iowa State looks like a gimmie win right now for Texas Tech, and they’ll have to upset Oklahoma State or Baylor to get bowl eligible. It’s going to be tough sledding for the Red Raiders for the rest of this month.
