Irving Nimitz’s first year participating in the 7-6A District was an adjustment period that unfortunately saw Nimitz in a down year after coordinating back-to- back playoff seasons as a member of the District 9- 6A classification.
Despite the losses, Nimitz was a competitive team and made teams work and fight for their wins. Even with a 2-3 record to begin the season, the team average margin of victory in those three losses was six points.
Unfortunately Nimitz struggled mightily in the remainder of their schedule and lost their remaining games.
So, Nimitz will be hitting the offseason hard and studying up as they hope to reclaim their status as a playoff team and ensure that those competitive close-knit games result in wins come next season.
Key Losses
WR Cody Norris, RB Mark Eugene, TE Zach Wilson
Mark Eugene was a weapon coming out of the backfield for Nimitz as he could break loose at any given moment. Eugen ran for 1,123 yards and 12 touchdowns and was their biggest home run threat. Nimitz will also be losing Cody Norris and Zach Wilson which combined for 61 receptions for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Key Returners
QB Adan Ponce, RB Christian Nelms, LB/RB Derrick Hamilton
Nimitz will have their bruising dual-threat quarterback Adan Ponce returning. Ponce yields a favorable frame at 6-2, 210 lbs and can be a hassle to take down. Ponce is not afraid of contact and if he is not able to find an open target, can easily tuck the ball and have defenders try their best to bring down the powerful quarterback. The soon-to-be junior will be coming off a season which he threw for 1,110 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 466 yards and four touchdowns.
Running back Christian Nelms will be another junior looking to play a pivotal role in the backfield and yield a punishing ground game. Derrick Hamilton who spent some time at running back and lined up at linebacker will be able to help out on both sides of the ball. Hamilton is credited with 50 tackles and is athletic enough to be an option at quarterback also.
The Verdict
Nimitz will still have to adjust to playing the schools currently in their district and continue to endure some growing pains. Nimitz will have an upcoming junior class that should yield some outstanding results but for the time being they will continue to fight and claw their way to becoming a program that can sufficiently garner some wins. This class coming up however is a perfect way to start the process of becoming a winning tradition.
