Jamie Dixon Ready to Lead Edna’s Football Program

Well, that did not take long. Less than a week after stepping down at Blanco, Jamie Dixon is back in the game, and he is taking over a big-time program.

On Thursday, Edna ISD named Dixon their new athletic director and head football coach, replacing Jimmie Mitchell. Mitchell helped turn Edna into a powerhouse with three straight state semifinal appearances, so the expectations are sky high.

For Dixon, the move makes a lot of sense. “I’ve gone against Edna plenty over the last few years, and I know firsthand how talented and tough those kids are,” Dixon said. “This is a great opportunity to build on something really special.”

Dixon knows winning. He racked up a 64-25 career record as a head coach, leading Vanderbilt Industrial to three straight 11-win seasons before taking Blanco to a regional semifinal and a regional final the past two years. Ironically, his Blanco squad lost to Edna in the 2023 playoffs, so he knows exactly what kind of team he is inheriting.

The new job also brings Dixon closer to home. His wife’s family lives in Edna, and the move puts them just an hour away from where they grew up.

“I feel really blessed,” Dixon said. “It is late in the offseason, so we have to hit the ground running — meet the kids, get the schemes in, and build relationships.”

The Cowboys will not have to overhaul much. Dixon says his system is pretty similar to what Mitchell ran, so the transition should be smooth. First steps? Install the schemes, rebuild the coaching staff, and get everyone rolling.

Big expectations, but if history says anything, Dixon is the right guy for the job.
