Jersey Village Leaning On High-Flying Offense To Break Playoff Drought

Jersey Village ended its season with a 42-21 win over Cy Lakes, giving the Falcons much-needed momentum going into the offseason after a 3-7 season in 2016.

The Falcons could score in bunches, but their defense proved rather leaky in giving up nearly 47 points a game.

Jersey Village loses quarterback Alec Wechsler to graduation. Wechsler passed for more than 250 yards and two touchdowns per game on average. His biggest threat was then-sophomore Jordan Jones, who’s tough for anyone to defend.

Jersey Village picked up district wins over Cy Woods and Cy Springs and posted 50 points in a loss to Langham Creek. The Falcons haven’t made the playoffs since 2006 when they were ousted by Katy in the first round.

Key Losses
OL Chris Paul, LB Jacob Clarkson, DL Greyson Newton, QB Alec Wechsler

The Falcons lose size on the offensive line with the graduation of Chris Paul, a first-team all-district selection who’s listed at 6-5, 305.

Clarkson was a 17-6A first-team selection with his production of 70 tackles, including 57 solo, and a team high 2 sacks.

Key Returners
WR Jordan Jones, RB Kendon Flowers, DB Simeon Roberts

Jones was a first-team all-district selection in 2016 as a sophomore when he led the Falcons in all receiving categories — 46 receptions, 725 yards and seven touchdown catches. Listed at 6-2, 190, he’s tough for any high school defensive back to tangle with. Good news for Jersey Village, and bad news for opposing defenses, Jones is only a junior going into the 2017 season.

Flowers led Jersey Village with 178 carries, eight touchdowns and 907 yards last season. He enters his senior campaign with last year’s second-leading rusher in Jireh Thompson, who had 431 yards and five touchdowns on 6.8 yards per carry.

Roberts is the leading returning tackles leader and also had a pick last year as a junior.

Verdict
Jersey Village can end a decade-long playoff drought by relying on the running of Flowers and Thompson and the big-time playmaking ability of junior Jordan Jones.

The Falcons are losing lots of beef in their front seven on defense, as well as a starting quarterback on offense. The skilled players returning on offense might have to keep the Falcons flying high with gobs of points while the rest of the team gets into playoff form.
