After leading Edna to three straight state semifinal appearances, head coach and athletic director Jimmie Mitchell is officially moving on.
Mitchell’s contract wasn’t renewed by Edna ISD earlier this year, and at Monday night’s board meeting, his request for reassignment was granted. That means one of the top jobs in 3A-Division I is now wide open.
And it’s hard to argue with the resume Mitchell leaves behind.
In five seasons with the Cowboys, he posted a 54-15 record, including a 14-1 campaign in 2024 that matched the best in school history. Under his leadership, Edna became a fixture in late December football, making it to the semifinals three straight years—a rare feat at any level.
Mitchell has been coaching for over two decades, with previous head coaching stops at Sinton, Sealy, Beeville Jones, and Manor. His overall record sits at 173-101.
According to sources close to the coach, he’s not hanging it up just yet. Mitchell plans to explore coaching opportunities this offseason.
Wherever he lands next, it’s safe to say he’ll bring big-game experience—and a proven ability to win when it matters most.
