Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler said that three time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt wants to pull a William “Refrigerator” Perry by lining up at fullback for several plays during the Texans’ Dec. 25 matchup with Pittsburgh so he can sock his brother. This information was divulged today when Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler appeared on a “Face Time” interview on the team’s official site.
“His brother is hoping he can play fullback once or twice when we play them this year so he can try to run over his brother,” said Butler.
“I don’t think any rookies know what it means to be in great shape until they’ve had a year in the national football league,” Butler said. “He’s got a jump because his brother can tell him, he can listen to his brother, he will listen to his brother in terms of what it’s gonna take. Most rookies will come in and think they’re in shape … but they’re not in shape for the NFL. We feel like he’s got a little jump on it.”
J.J. has had some success lining up in the backfield. In 2014, Watt was a perfect three-for-three in receptions that led to touchdowns. However, each of those times he was used as a fullback it was in a receiver role, not as a running back making it easier for T.J. to lay a hit on his older brother.
If this pattern continues, it looks like T.J. will not get his wish; unless with his “sixth sense” type brother knowledge he’ll know that J.J. is going to be used as a receiver and not as a running back.
But, who knows. Maybe this interview today is just a ruse played by the Watt brothers. Maybe, when Christmas Day comes, and the Steelers are just a yard or two out, it will be T.J. lining up in the backfield, and not J.J.
Or, maybe we’ll see these two look like two rams, colliding with each other with a brute force. And, maybe we’ll see the two brothers get heated over who hit each other a bit too hard. I mean, it’s happened before in the NHL where Keith and Wayne Primeau fought each other during a Hartford Whalers-Buffalo Sabers game.
