It didn’t take long for the winner of this contest to be determined. The Katy Tigers did what good teams do, they came out and dominated the Taylor Mustangs. It’s been 21 years since the Mustangs beat the Tigers, and that didn’t change tonight.
With 3:29 left in the 1st quarter, Tigers running back Deondrick Glass had nine carries, which isn’t all that impressive, but the 144 yards on those nine carries is. Glass had 73 of those yards on the Tiger’s opening 75-yard touchdown drive that was capped off with 21-yard run by Glass. Glass would finish the night with 11 carries for 166 yards, adding on one more touchdown later in the first quarter.
Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin arrived in style via helicopter to do some recruiting.
It was reported by 247sports.com that Sumlin would be in attendance to get a look at Texas A&M commit Cameron Horry, son of former NBA star Robert Horry. Sumlin was also looking at 2018 defensive end Max Wright, 2018 running back Ean Beek, 2018 defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia, and 2019 offensive tackle Andrew Coker as well from the Mustang side.

Sumlin surely had to be impressed in what he saw on the Katy side. Sumlin was checking out defensive end Corey Bethley, offensive lineman Hayden Howerton (Rice commit), tight end Parker Eichenberger (Houston commit), linebacker Breydon Boyd (Boise State commit), defensive end Ryder Anderson (Arkansas commit), wideout JC Santana, linebacker Raymond Randle (Houston Baptist commit), 2018 offensive lineman Connor Galvin, 2018 defensive end Michael Matus, 2018 kicker/punter Seth Small, and 2019 running back Deondrick Glass.
Sumlin was done at halftime, and so were the Katy starters. Katy didn’t need their services anymore for the night, as they were up 38-0.
The Tigers obviously aren’t playing the same talent level that they did in their non-district schedule, but the defense is clearly growing and getting better. The way the defense played against the Mustangs was shades of last year’s dominant defense. The Mustangs had a total of 32 total yards in the first half and one mere first down. The Tigers finished with 428 total yards to Mustang’s 78.
It wasn’t until 6:24 left in the game that the Mustangs finally got into Katy territory, and that was on a Taylor fumble recovery at the Tigers’ 26 yard line. The Tigers would hold the Mustangs on 4th and inches to preserve the shutout. The Mustangs had almost as many first downs via penalties on the Tigers than they did on their own, two from penalties and four from actually moving the ball. With time winding down, the Mustangs tried to ruin the Tiger’s shutout using their timeouts and trying to score. On the last play of the game the Mustangs got stopped at the one yard line, earning the Tigers their first shutout of the year.
The Tigers finished the scoring at 48-0. The Tigers move to 3-2 and the Mustangs fall back down to .500 at 2-2. The Tigers have an open week next week, and the Mustangs take on Mayde Creek.
