One week after giving up 49 points and needing double overtime to takedown Klein Collins the Katy Tigers defense showed up, only allowing 100 yards total offense to The Woodlands Highlanders in the first half. One problem, Katy’s offense didn’t show up tonight.

In a scene the Tigers’ faithful saw last week, not one but two snaps went over the Tigers’ punter Seth Small’s head this week. The first resulted in a safety and the second would turn into a Highlanders’ field goal. For the majority of the first half The Woodlands best offense was the Katy’s long snapper.

It took Katy until the first play of the second quarter to pick up their first first down of the game. The Tigers looked like they were going to take take the lead midway through the second when they were at the Highlander two yard line. Rocky Emery rolled out to the right and was leveled by Nick Rister knocking the ball loose. The fumble was returned for a touchdown, but called back due to a personal foul penalty during the return on the Highlanders. Emery would leave the game for the rest of the half, but later returned.

Of the 100 first half yards the Highlanders had 46 of them came on a late second quarter pass from Eric Schmid to wideout Dylan Casey. The long pass would be the big play the Highlanders needed to score before halftime. The Woodlands would score a few plays later to extended their lead to 12-0. The Highlanders’ defense was even tougher than the Tigers defense in the first half only giving up 82 yards, 32 of them were on the ground to Deondrick Glass.

The Woodlands got the ball to start the second half at their own 15 then proceeded to march down the field with little resistance, scoring on a Jordan Talford one-yard run putting the Highlanders up 19-0.

The Tigers finally got on the board with a 27-yard field goal by Seth Small to prevent the shutout. With 5:45 left in the game the Highlanders handed the Tigers the final blow when Eric Schmid hit Chris Stewart for a 21-yard touchdown pass, 26-3.

Coming into this game the question was could the Katy defense slow down the Highlanders offense just enough to give Deondrick Glass and the rest of the Tigers offense a chance. The defense played well enough for the Tigers to win, but with no forced turnovers and the offense being a no show their effort wasn’t enough. This is definitely not the Tigers team from last year, and everyone knew that coming into this season. One thing that can be said for the Tigers is that this is the toughest non-district schedule they have had in awhile, but these are the type of teams they will be facing in the playoffs.

Katy goes into district play with a 1-2 record, and will face a very tough Cinco Ranch team next looking to take advantage of a vulnerable looking Katy team. There is the old saying “history likes to repeat itself” and Katy fans should remember the last time the Tigers started off 1-2 and lost to The Woodlands they went on to win the 2008 state title… They also lost to Cinco Ranch that year for the first time in the rivalry.
