The Katy Tigers will finish their season Saturday morning against Mayde Creek. The Rams have one lone win this season by one point that came in week three of the season against Nimitz. I think it is safe to say that the Tigers are the heavy favorite in the regular season finale.
The Tigers already know who they will be taking on in the first round of the playoffs, and it will the other Tigers in the area, the Fort Bend Travis Tigers. Travis has a tough matchup against Fort Bend Kempner this week, but the result won’t have any impact on the playoffs for Travis.
Both Tigers teams have high powered offenses, but the way they get there are very different. Katy is known for their running game and this year is no different, led by super sophomore Deondrick Glass. Glass is averaging 160 yards per game, and for a team that mostly runs the ball that may seem like nothing special, but when you look at his carries it becomes eye-popping. Glass is averaging 10.8 per carry, that is a first down every time he carries the ball. The couple times I have seen Katy in person Glass was usually done at the half and at one point his last carry came with nine minutes left in the second quarter against Seven Lakes. Later in the season Glass had seven straight carries end with a touchdown.
This is the part of the season where the Katy teams start getting evaluated on how well the season went. It is also the part where Katy starts to defend their state title, this time it will be in division one.
The Travis Tigers take to the air to get their yards and points, both teams average around 42 points. Amryn Jeffrey will most likely have thrown for over 3,000 yards when the Tigers face off, as he is at 2,900 now with one game left. Travis has their own super sophomore in Arjei Henderson and is easily Jeffrey’s favorite target. Henderson has over 1,100 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns in nine games.
This game should be a great first round game. Both with different meanings for each team, but with the same goal. Katy is looking to prove that they have grown up from their early season growing pains and Travis looks to prove they can beat a defending state champ and make a deep playoff run.
Great 1st round game? Yeah….for maybe a quarter, possibly two. No way Travis’ D can stop the Tigers pound-n-ground game though. Should be a convincing win by the Katy Tigers after 48 minutes.
Speed has always given Katy trouble. Katy will be able to run the ball, but will their defense be able to stop the passing game. They put up great stats in district, but is that because the defense got that much better or the competition. I need to see the defense play someone other than teams like Seven Lakes and Tompkins. I think Katy will win, but interested to see how much the defense has grown since The Woodlands game.
This will be the closest thing to a challenge for Katy since they were defeated by the Woodlands. I do think that they will pull it out. The last time Katy started the season with a record this bad was in 2003 (7 -3) they won a state championship. This year entering the playoffs with an 8 – 2 record should not make anyone under estimate Coach Joseph and the Katy Tigers.
