BELLMEAD, Texas — In what could be described as a SEC-style football game, La Vega High School secured a 20-10 win over rival China Spring High School on Friday night at Pirate Stadium.
The 10-point victory kept the (7-0, 2-0) Pirates undefeated on this season while the loss put the (5-2, 1-1) Cougars in third place in district 13 -4A, behind La Vega and Gatesville.
“This was your typical China Spring and La Vega ball game,” La Vega Coach Willie Williams said after the game.
La Vega made it clear from the first snap it was going to force China Spring to stop the run. The Pirates attacked the Cougars defense with an array of rushes behind each element of its five-man offensive front. To that end, Williams said he was pleased with the play of his offensive line and expressed his pleasure with their efforts.
“Our offensive line played great,” Williams continued. “They have been playing really well as a unit and I can’t ask much more out of them.”
La Vega utilized its passing game sparingly, making quick throws to allow receivers to use their speed as an advantage. The Pirates were able to get on the board after the Cougars got an early field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The Pirates inaugural score came from a Cameron Henry (13 rushes, 89 yards, TD) jet sweep for six yards.
China Spring took a similar approach, spreading the ball out to receivers to open up the quarterback run.
La Vega was able to find the end zone twice in the second half to help secure its victory, once on a 36 – yard touchdown pass from Jamal Williams to Malachi Wright. The second, a rushing touchdown by Kimochi Hobbs, was the dagger.
China Spring got their lone touchdown of the game after the La Vega defense was flagged for a late hit on the quarterback. The ensuing play Johnson threw a 43 -yard dart to Steven Russo, with 5:32 in the 3rd quarter. It brought the score to 14-10.
Defense, on both sides
The defensive play from both teams was phenomenal, as each quarterback was forced into throwing an interception. China Spring receiver K. J. Peoples fumbled as La Vega’s Jared Rogers was able to recover the ball.
The Pirates ball hawking DB Donta Stuart was able to snag his sixth interception of the season, a category in which he leads the Waco area.
What’s Next?
Next week China Spring will host Gatesville(7-0,2-0) and La Vega will travel to Lampasas.
