HOUSTON— The storied tale of the 2017 Humble Kingwood Mustangs came to a end Saturday afternoon at TDECU Stadium, falling to the Langham Creek Lobos 51-16 in the 6A Division II Region III semi-final.
“I’m excited,” said Lobos head coach Todd Thompson on advancing to the state quarterfinals. “We’ve had some really good teams in years past but we’ve just had bad luck in the playoffs. This year we’ve been winning games and keep getting better; I think we’re still getting better.”
The Lobos first scored within in the first two minutes of regulation and in irregular fashion. Rather than attempt the field goal on 4th and 10 on the Mustangs 25-yard line, the Lobos opted to go for it. A simple post route was all it took to score the six points from just beyond the red-zone, delivered on a beautiful zip pass from quarterback Chris Herron to receiver Devin Lawrence.
The Lobos would score three more times in the first quarter. Herron would find a pass to receiver Golden Eke for the 51-yard catch and go touchdown. Later on, Azema took the snap and dove right over a handful of defenders, lighting up the scoreboard once more.
Finally, right before the end of the first quarter, running back Chris Mehn would get in on some of the action as well, pounding in a 5-yard rushing score with less than a minute left to make it 27-0 going into the second quarter.
Herron finished the game with six completions that were good for 119 yards in the air, coupling that with a pair of passing touchdowns as well as a rushing score to give him the hat trick on the day.
Langham Creek would proceed to tack on three more scores in the game including a 23-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Kingwood, who went scoreless nearly all game, finally put some points on the board midway through the third quarter after receiver Nolan Powell reeled in a lofty 60-yard bomb from quarterback Matt Slayton. A few minutes later the Mustangs knocked in a 27-yard field goal to reduce the deficit to 51-9.
Slayton would end up throwing another touchdown in the fourth quarter to receiver Trey Gould from 14-yards out to cap the scoring.
This will be Langham Creek’s first appearance in the state quarterfinals. For it to come against Cy-Fair will certainly be a treat for all Cypress residents and Texas high school football fans in general.
“It’s a great accomplishment for our district to have two teams playing each other in the regional final,” Thompson said It’s gonna be a lot fun. Our kids are excited.”
The excitement and glee from the players walking off the field Saturday afternoon was expectedly high, but can be epitomized by a single sentence uttered from one Lobos teammate to another, “We just made history.”
Langham Creek (11-1) will play Cy-Fair (12-0) for the 6A Division II State Quarterfinal at 1pm next Saturday at the Berry Center in Cypress.
