Last-Minute Heroics Seals Monterey’s 14-7 Win Over Coronado
On Friday night, the Coronado Mustangs faced their cross-town rival Monterey Plainsmen in district play.
Coronado Mustangs
Quarterback Isaiah Vazquez completed 7 of 16 passes for 68 yards, rushed for 53 yards, and scored a touchdown. Vazquez connected with Surreal Garrett 2 times for 28 yards, Kevonte Carr 1 time for 21 yards, and Dom Parrish and J.J. Willis, who each had a reception. Struggling to move the ball through the air, the Mustangs relied on the ground game as Demarion Finch rushed for 132 yards on 23 carries, and Davian Lopez rushed for 10 yards on 3 carries. The Mustangs defense played well as they held the Plainsmen scoreless up until the 4th quarter.
Monterey Plainsmen
Luke Arrington completed 3 of 8 passes for 29 yards connecting with receivers Kash Lewis on a 23-yard receiving touchdown, and Sebastian Alvarez, who had a 6-yard reception. As the passing game was not as strong as the Plainsmen wanted on Friday, they relied on running back Ja’Marcus Smith, who rushed for 144 yards on 25 carries, scoring the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter as the time ran out to give the Plainsmen the win.
Monterey wins 14-7.
Next week Monterey will travel to Amarillo to play their final district game at Amarillo Dick Bivins Stadium. The Coronado Mustangs will be at home at Lowery Stadium to play their final district game against Tascosa.
